Lewes based company The Flintman Company run practical one-day courses on flint and its use in building structures. Nick Tyson, Curator of The Regency Town House encouraged me to take this course as it would give me more knowledge about traditional local building materials and techniques (flint and bungaroosh walls being common in the Sussex area).
The course took place at the St Michael the Archangel Church in South Malling, Lewes and was led by David Smith.
In the morning we sat inside the church to learn about the theory of flint wall construction, how to source materials and different knapped flint finishes. After lunch we went out into the churchyard to learn how to snap and knap flints and try different laying techniques.
