Practical Masonry

For Christmas I was given a copy of WR Purchase’s Practical Masonry (first published in 1896, the revised 1904 edition reprinted by Donhead in 2009) by my friend, Andy Charman, an experienced Stonemason who served his apprenticeship on Westminster Abbey.

We met in 2008 when Andy was working on the Royal Pavilion and he also came to do some work at The Regency Town House when we were laying the flagstones in the yard.

With the agreement of Nick Tyson, the Curator of the Regency Town House, I had started to practice some stone carving in the Kitchen of the Basement Annexe which was set up with a workbench.

After completing a carving I’d been working on for the past year, Andy suggested I have a go at some architectural mouldings.

With Andy’s guidance and Purchase’s book for inspiration I’m really starting to develop my masonry skills.
